SELF HELP PROJECT: HELPING WOMEN HELP THE FAMILY

Women have shown to be dedicated bread winners for their families especially in third world countries. For example, all throughout the Liberian Civil War, women took the heavy burden. Even in the presence of men or their husbands, they appeared to be the runners of the home affairs for the family. I saw that in my mother who was very helpful in the absence of my dad. She provided all she could and gave us comfort. She used every resource wisely. Through a "self help micro finance project" funded by wealthy individuals and NGOs in which a total of about $20.00 or more was given to an individual to start a quick business to help support the family and pay back the loan in a period of about two to four months, amazingly my mother did all she could and paid back her first loan in one month. She wanted to be credible and accountable to her creditors. I saw how such small help project helped us survived some of the most difficult times living as refugees in Ivory Coast. After living for many years in the Ivory Coast as a refugee, it was my hope to one day do a quick project to help women and their families. One of the things that came to my mind was the same "self help micro project" that has helped me while living as a refugee. Since I have very little financial resources, I started a program of about 40 women with a $25.00 loan to see if this pilot project could change their lives like it did for me and my family. I am hoping that my predictions will be right and that many more women will benefit. If my predictions are proven to be correct, I will expand this project as soon as the first group of women who benefited from the program pays back their loan.
